On “Live n Kickin” Classical Music @ Dresden Gallery

The “Cutting Edge” of Classical Music at The Dresden Gallery

Posted on January 25, 2010 by Delinda Dyrssen

“The Schumann Duo” on Live n Kickin’ at The Dresden Gallery

David Weiss and Alpha Hockett Walker The Schumann Duo in Second Life, who are husband and wife, began performing together as a duo in 1982 — David on oboe, English horn, and musical saw and Alpha on piano and electronic keyboard.

Alpha performed as an oboist with the L.A. Philharmonic during each of the 1991 through 1997 Hollywood Bowl seasons, and under Esa-Pekka Salonen, she played on tours to Paris, New York, Washington D.C., and at home at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.  She has been featured several times (as pianist) on Philharmonic Chamber Music Society Concerts.

David, who recently retired as principal oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1973-2003), previously held first chair posts with the Metropolitan Opera National Company, the Pittsburgh Symphony, National Symphony, and the West Point Military Academy Band. As an oboe soloist, he has played at New York’s Caramoor Festival, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Recital Hall, and at the Los Angeles Music Center. His first of many solo performances with the Philharmonic was in 1962 when he was fifteen years old.

Since 1982, David Weiss has gained notoriety for his performances on the musical saw (a hardware-store variety Stanley Handyman). July 1985 marked his Hollywood Bowl debut on the musical saw in a work specially commissioned for him by the Philharmonic.  It also marked the release of his album “Virtuoso Saw” which has received international critical acclaim and distribution. To hear examples of David’s saw playing, click here! David has appeared on the Tonight show, Prairie Home Companion, at Disneyland, on television commercials, and movies – most recently in the Grammy Award winning “O Brother Where Art Thou?”  David and Alpha form the chamber duo known as DnA.

This weeks location will be The Dresden Gallery Island in Second Life.  One of the world´s most famous museums, the Old Masters Picture Gallery of the Dresden State Art Collections.  There you can view great masterpieces of key importance for the history of art, such as Raphael´s “Sistine Madonna” or Giorgione´s “Sleeping Venus”.  All the rooms of the museum have been reconstructed true to scale  and all 750 masterpieces in the permanent exhibition are on display.  You can even pick up a self guided Tour audio player like you would in the real world museum.

Thanks  to the People atSecond Interest Virtual Business Solutions for arranging for us to film this weeks show at The Dresden.

Therapy or therapeutic is a good way to describe the concert “PM”will perform Live in the beautiful setting of Black Taj in Second Life .  White Taj is modeled after the real life Taj Mahal. It’s neighboring sim, Black Taj, is a product of the creator’s imagination, fulfilling the legend that Shah Jehan had intended to build a second Taj Mahal in black to be his tomb Rather than a tomb, the Taj recreations contain a ballroom, a gallery, a beach, gardens, and underneath all of this are the most spectacular caves you will ever see in SecondLIfe . Thank You to Arusu Apfelbaum for use of this location.  You can find out more about  Black and White Taj here.
