Tonight Live has Mathew Perrault and Native American Nany Kayo

April 25th on Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe 6pm at Northpoint Studios

18th Century Fashion and Versailles, A Plea for support from one of Second Life’s most loved musicians, and Native American representation in Second Life, disrespectful? or just role play?….

(edit) Due to unforeseen circumstances Nonna Hedges will not be seen on this Episode of Tonight Live:

Matthew Perrault, is one of my favorite musicians in Second Life. Why? because he is an incredibly talented and creative musician to start with. His albums are a combination of narrative documentary, music and incredible melody and a deep thoughtfulness. Matthew’s style may not be an easy sell in the 2000′s but I feel his style of music is vitally important in this world of increasingly banal commercial drivel that reigns today. Matthew is also, just a really nice guy! He has a lovely nature, you just want him to succeed! Now you may be able to have a small stake in his eventual fame and glory! Matthew recently started a campaign to support his now full time career as a musician with his real life band “The Matthew Show”He launched this campaign with a video on You Tube called “A quick word from Matthew and Dean” It leads to a webpage titled www.feedmatthew.com where you can subscribe to Matthew and his band, by subscribing and providing a donation to the Matthew Show’s continuing musical operations, “keeping him out of the cubicle and in your speakers where he belongs. You’ll get all tracks released during your membership for free, plus special unreleased material”.

Matthew has also released the first episode of a Podcast Documentary, which features his old school days band. Its the story about a band that never “made it” and what happened subsequently to the members. Called “The Band that Never Was” it is an anathema to the usual music doco where “successful” bands are usually featured. Its a charming and funny series of recollections from the band and their Journey together, which was eventually bound to “fail” (in their words) The band may not have been a financial success, but it certainly lead to some strong lifetime friendships…(if you can call early 30′s a lifetime) I want to know how its all going? Has Matthew had to go back to full time work, in the cubical ? What is he hoping for in the end? Is this the way that most musicians have to go these days, diversify? market? ask for support financially from their fans? because if you don’t fit into a pidgeon hole you won’t make it? Why has he decided NOT to make another Album?

Nany Kayo is a Native American and she runs the Virtual Native Lands Sim here in Second Life. A sim dedicated to education and the appreciation of all things culturally about Native Americans, past and present. Nany was recently quoted in an article on www.barnabeg.com discussing the problems that true Native Americans have with people in Second Life respecting Native American culture, and not representing it respectively. However many people and cultures in Second Life are parodied, or represented in role play, so why should we consider Native Americans over say….Dutch clog dancers…or Irish Leprechauns….Why is it more important for Native Americans to be represented more authentically? are they saying that no Non-Native American should role play an “Indian” in Second Life in say, country and western role playing sims? Are there some things that are ok and something not? What are those things? where should we draw the line between ridicule and just fun and games? Do Native Americans feel that because they are still struggling immensely in real life for understanding and respect for their culture, still, that they must object to ridicule and bastardisation of their culture in Second Life? I’m undecided, to be honest, I haven’t really thought about it, but I really want to understand. I would hate to think that I would insult a culture out of ignorance.  I would never present myself in Second Life as a Jew, or as a Black American or a disabled person, because I do know there are somethings that you just don’t touch, out of respect. Im also not convinced that saying you learn about other cultures by “dressing up as them” in RP is valid either. But thats my opinion, maybe yours is different. I’m really looking forward to finding out from Nany what her perspective is, and what the general thoughts are from the Native American Community in Second Life.
