Another great crowd! (We crashed the Sim! )and a great show! Guests included Chancellor of Caledon Oxbridge, Carl Metropolitan talking about the scrapped community gateway program;  singer / songwriter Tribbs Nirvana; and well known journalist and blogger Mitch Wagner for a perspective on Linden Labs new Fast Easy Fun.

The results of my escapade into “Noob land” come full circle on this show in a revealing interview with Carl Metropolitan. Who gives his take on the scrapping of the Community Gateway program that helped new users learn about Second Life without being harassed, and confused.

Tribbs Nirvana is a wonderfull Singer and Musician and she loves her hippy SL pad, she wants one in real life! she also talked about her V’logging and what it means to her and why and HOW she does it.

Mitch Wagner mentions in this interview that he  spoke with Philp Linden last week about all the recent Linden Lab announcements, (off the record) he gives us his insight into what Philp really thinks right now, and how Philip Linden is disappointed by the response to his SLCC Keynote amongst other things. Mitch also talks about why he is moving away from Second Life and what led to that. Mitch has a strong response to the Teen Grid closing and talks about that also. Enjoy the show!

Last weeks show with the Emerald Owners, was a blast! but its now onwards and upwards, I’m sure most of you still have many many questions about Emerald, and will be watching to see if you get a more trustworthy better client from them, and we wish them well. But its now time to catch up on some other stories that were pushed off the “FRONT PAGE” (as it were) when the Emerald Story broke.

I sense a feeling of great hope within Second Life, and yet I also feel there is some great uncertainness. Under the reign of M LInden there was a huge push towards Serious Business, Education, and new users, at the sacrifice of the regular users of Second Life. The existing and dedicated residents during this time let Linden Lab know in no uncertain terms, that they now felt unwelcome, ignored, and not part of the future picture that Linden Lab were painting. It seemed Linden Lab wanted more and better “NORMAL” users, money through serious business, and credibitlity through Education.

Readers… you do not need a history lesson, but Philip Linden/Rosedale in both his Q & A appearance with Wallace Linden and COO Bob Komin recently filmed by Treet.tv and his 2010 SLCC keynote seemed to  promised us a better running platform, more consultations with the existing residents a renewed focus on doing less more, and of course FAST EASY FUN!  But since I watched those speeches I’m worried..the scrapping of the Community Gateway program with hardly any notice, and no community consultation?…reducing concierge hours during the times we Aussies and the Europeans are actually using the client?(used to be 24/7) I wonder if this is just the promise of doing less more? or part of focusing on us the community?…Was all of that original hope I had misplaced? I’m wondering if the new Tshirt slogan  ”FAST EASY FUN” is actually aimed at the Linden’s and not US! Tthey are FAST scrapping programs and making it EASYer for them and having FUN doing it?

Mitch Wagner is a Freelance technology journalist, professional blogger, social media strategist, author of the Computerworld Tool Talk blog, social media director for Palisade Systems and host and creator of the Copper Robot podcast, (there is no acronym for all of that as far as I know..) In his work as a journalist for Computerworld he made the prediction, during the Linden Lab 30% Staff layoffs that the sackings could be the beginning of the end for Linden Lab, “I’m afraid I don’t see much of a future for Second Life” he said….this gloomy view coming from an usually quite optimistic Tech journalist, who clearly loves Second Life. I invited Mitch on find out how he interprets these latest changes and the new philosophy coming from the re-instated CEO Philip Linden/Rosedale. Yes, its a bit of crystal ball gazing..but Mitch oftne gets a very good insight into the inner workings of Linden Lab. And recently interviewed Philip Linden.  Mitch has recently stopped hosting his Copper Robot interview show in  Second Life, the show still exists but is no longer just about Second Life, there were some frustrations he had with the platform that lead to this. I’d like to find out what tipped the Mic so to speak..

This week we also welcome a delightful singer and V’logger on the show Tribbs Nirvana, she does have a little of the hippy in her for sure, here music and songs are just wonderfull, and she like a lot of musicians were dragged into Second Life by a freind and stayed.

Community Gateway Program Scrapped!

As my post from yesterday notes, we are also going to hear from a very disgruntled Carl Metropolitan who along with many other communities were responsible for a great many retentions from newly signed up residents being guided to the Community Gateway that he ran at the very large and popular Caladon group of Sims. I went out to the sims, went through some of the orientation found it very clear and understandable and met a 1 hour old Noobie called Joshua, who spend some time with me telling me what he first hour was like. I then went in “under cover” to discover for myself what the experience was now like! and I was shocked frankly I had no idea it was that bad.

From the Announcement by Linden Lab “As we move towards this goal, we are ending the Community Gateway (CG) program, effective immediately. Ultimately, we want new Residents to be able to begin their time in Second Life at any location, connecting immediately to user-created experiences that interest them. For example, if you’ve joined Second Life because you’re interested in a re-creation of an historical site, then we want you to begin your  experience not by walking through a welcome area, but by exploring the space you came to enjoy, and learning basic functions as you go. With our current model, there’s too much distance between new users and the amazing Resident-created content they come to Second Life to enjoy. We’re working now to close that gap.”

Carl and the other Sim owners included in this project were informed that the project would be scrapped about 18 hours before hand. This after over 2 years of service and spending money and time to set up a Gateway to help noobies work out the maze that is second Life. There will be now sim owners dumping their sims as their traffic drops no  doubt, and the weird thing is that Linden Lab haven’t really set up an alternative…unless what I experienced was it! Have Linden Lab done such a huge back flip on their viewer 2 drive to get more noobs to stay, as to ignore them now? lure them in with a glossy amazing website only to find out on entering that they have been duped?

As I did say jokingly in my other post I invited a Linden Lab spokesperson on the show, but with short notice and being as it was the weekend this was not possible.

Noooo that is not me with the Noob head!

In my effort to be taken seriously as a Talk Show host…and …interviewer…I decided that with Carl Metropolitan from the previous Community Gateway of Caledon coming on the show this week to talk about the Linden Lab Community Gateway Program recently being disbanded, that I would go DEEP undercover as a NOOB. To go where no Talk Show Host has gone before…What would I find? what obstacles would I have to overcome?. This was of course a natural journey for me, being, as I studied for 3 years as a Method Actress, it would be easy to impersonate a Noob…well not really impersonate but to find the essence of the noob…and get into the motivations and psyche of the noob, using one or more of the 43 motivational techniques I had learned and memorised in my Method acting classes.

Firstly… I had to find how to join up on the Second Life website…that was no easy task….this was like a quest, a test? where is the” join now” button?? oh Big Gold Button!!!……Clicks it…um…I was then taken to the “create a name” screen! OMG I have to create a name…um…Boompsie was a name that no one would associate with a serious journa…um Talk Show host like me..Boompsie Qissinger is the name I chose because phonetically it sounded like a very impressive name….a man who was a famous ambassador a mediator…a crook???? um ok…Now to choose an avi, I choose a serious looking sort of UNDERCOVER Avi, and …oh should I lie about my age? um…..well why not? never be legally be able to do that any other time! Oh come on! I only took 10 years off!

Ok I’m in!!! oh asking me to become a premium member ummmm spend money…um well haven’t done that well this month advertising on our show…so maybe not yet…have to wait till ratings come out…

Um not in…yet..  I have to download an application…whew big app…Ok firing up the app…”good bye Cruel World!!! ” Now….what was my password! um nope not sent to me in a email…Ok now there is a very loooong terms of service agreement…see you in a few hours…sigh…

Yikes I’m in! there are 3  of us here,… at a place that looks like sort of heaven!…one person is a ….Ruth!!! how the hell…and one is a cloud..um now he is trying to talk to me..He tells me its his first time, “isn’t it exiting shall we explore”…(bet you say that to all the Noob girls sheesh!) I walk inside heaven following the arrows, only using my left hand on my arrow keys, to simulate the noob walk to really get into character……oh right the noob walk is already given to me…rolls eyes.

I walk in, and the only thing of color is a …Parrot??? hmmm why? a parrot??? why…The parrot is talking to me…asking for a kiss hmm I heard about sex in this place…My first SL semi sexual experience, I visualise my wonderfull real life husband as I’m typing kiss you… to portray “noob kisses bird” in the script…oh ok this is Improv… the parrot totally gets it! and is also in character! not….

I follow more arrows and come to a huge board with choices ..Hmmm I choose “find help”….cause I have no money for shopping and I’m scared to go exploring…

I get to this sim that is sort of Italian or Spanish looking and see a huge sign! “Get Paid for adding this location to your profile pics” what’s a profile pic anyway..(totally in character now…BE A NOOB…FEEL the emotions of a NOOB) I’m now into my 20th minute after log in…hmmm I don’t have money is it really money? monopoly money? is it safe?

The pop-up menu is asking me to identify the letters I’m seeing to prove I’m not a Robot? like are Robots banned in here is this like Blade Runner!!! yikes looks wildly around…for Darryl Hannah! …ummm I can’t work it out! bloody hieroglyphics!!! gees I’m already dyslexic!….gawd…

At the same place I meet someone called.. “info specialist”…but he doesn’t talk to me, must have got one of those Info Specialist Degrees off an internet site…..hmmm Holy crap he’s a Robot! or a replicant!!! do not look him in the eye!!! with this sort of blurred non characteristic face…he looks like…Tom Cruise! yes thats it…

I find this teleport thingy like from StarGate..(NOT not another Gate this week…I don’t know if I can take it!)…and…ok I see my avatar jump up on the vortex thing, but I disapear…ummm (this is where one would have to know to click escape? but there is not info to tell you this..so I get out of character for a sec, to do so…grumble grumble…) sigh I am trying to be truthful to the character of Boompsie here but really true artists just aren’t appreciated these days…

Ok… Im now in very blue confusing place with signs all around, sigh do I have to sit here and read everything!!! I walk around and then (lagg walk) walk outside the floating room through the wall OMG Im falling!!! …that was weird..right now even though I know what Second Life is…I feel strangly bewildered and over-stimulated with information on signs, not knowing which ones to read. and pissed off that I keep getting stuck in sort of jello! and I’m now lonely and looking over my shoulder for stray Robots!…where are the people!!!

Fell down and landed in a sort of Italian square…but there is no one here……Where is that cafe that was in the video..on the front page of the website? This place looks like it..but it must be a public holiday is it closed? I walk around lots of empty shops with rent here..and I get stuck…can’t walk…!!!!!

I click one of the signs to Go to a club Music! People!!! …no ….one…there…..sigh…wow I thought this was suppsed to be a place to meet people in Second Life…ok now trying another club from the info board…no one here…and I look like Im walking through jelly…My eyes are now bleeding…see pic right…

I wish now I went exploring with that happy clappy guy that I came in, with but I was too shy…besides I think he was part of a Cult.

really no-wonder this is free sigh…Gees if this an example of what people are faced with when they arrive… sigh…wow….Even Pip Linden looks good next to these 2005 NOOB clothes and skins!! Heeeelppp I’ve been kidnapped by alians back to 2005! whoops..wrong character…

Ok so this has well and truely been A “first hour experience”…(in character now) and truely I just don’t get it…where are all the fantastic sims and the Live music the models?….I see a LOT of empty places..and I feel totally intimidated..

OMG I am a NOOB! totally immersed in my method acting undercover role!

And you know what? I just wanna go back and sit on the couch and watch the telly. Cause I went nowhere interesting, I was overwhelmed with signs and I had no interest in sitting there trying to work out which ones to use or read..I liked my avatar…but the walk was dorky and I would never take up those freebie clothes for anything! they were not a patch on the clothes I came in with!!! (and thats Boompsie saying that NOT Paisley!)

Ok Im ready! Im ready to meet Carl Metropolitan, armed, armed with an immense amount of personal experience now, and Linden Lab should be using me totally as Guinea pig…ah well not pig…um example..umm…well they SHOULD Listen…

Rose was the Banned Artist from this years SLB7, she talks about how she felt about having her beautiful work just “mailed” back to her by Courtney Linden with not much of an explanation. And Keiko is “That Girl” the “IT” girl from the Second Life ads all over, “Be Your Avatar” She talks during this Show about how she is now recognised in the Bank Queue and the Grocery store after all her publicity from being a Musician on Second Life. Of course we also have the Emerald leaders on the show. (did you miss that?) Arabella Steadham and Jessica Lyon talking in depth about the recent Emerald Viewer drama’s.

Thought you might be interested to know some of.. what happened behind the scenes leading up to todays Mega Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe Show. Firstly BIG thanks for all the guests who agreed to come on the show.

In a way Rose Borchovski and Keiko Takamura were hijacked at this show, but I wanted both of them on the show and the Emerald Team, we had prepared for them, and they both deserved to benifit from the huge exposure that this show got. To their credit they did not back down, and I think their interviews were wonderful.

About five weeks back, I decided I wanted to have the Emerald Viewer Developers on Tonight Live, why? Well the Emerald viewer had caught my eye..again. I had downloaded a Beta 64bit Emerald viewer for the Windows side of my Mac, that was essentially screaming along in fps for me. Now..I live very close to the City of Sydney but I get 5fps out here on the Beaches, ADSL, bad old copper wiring and 3K from the nearest Phone Exchange…and my Macbook Pro has again fallen behind Windows on frame rate for me. My Laptop has only JUST had its first birthday, when I bought it last year I had it custom designed with the fastest Graphic Card available on Macbook Pro. Being as I’m often in very overcrowded lag I needed it. I’d used Emerald before with varying results but this Beta download surpassed them all. (The download has since been recalled)

Obviously last week I noticed things in the Emerald camp started to break down, first the news about LordGregGreg leaving the team, then the latest curfuffle over the last few days. See Modular Systems website if you’ve been out of town for a while..

My COO and right hand girl, Bliss Windlow was basically doing what she does, she was schmoozing the potential Guests, Fractured Crystal the owner of Emerald was understandably nervous about appearing on TV in front of a live audience…and would only come on with Communications Manager of Emerald at the time Arabella Steadham. Which was all totally fine. As this situation hotted up over the last week, I was becoming nervous that they wouldn’t show up…we have had other guests pull out of our show for far less drama, when they felt not “up” to facing a crowd, (No names here..).

My fears were confirmed in a message from Bliss, Arabella Steadham had resigned from the Emerald Team, she won’t be appearing, Fractured would not come on without her..No Emerald Team Guests!!. So0000 we did what we always do when this happens, FIND a guest! hopefully to commentate and provide insight and opinion on the Emerald situation.  (As Keiko wonderfully sketched above) We never ever give up on a show! (Some of our dragged-on-at-last minute previous guests will attest to this!) Having sent out emails  to some likely victim…um I mean potential guests, I logged out to watch the ABC Drama for Sunday night viewing (yep we are a day in front here) thinking, “I can’t do anything untill the U.S gets out of bed anyway!”..(this was 4am U.S time) The iPhone started buzzing…hmmmmm

Bliss yells out from the email We have Arrabella!!!…and Jessica!!! I thought….we live to fight another day!

And….they have a big announcement, they want to announce it on the show!…I re-write my script another time…(I usually have a list of possible questions and the intros written to guide me in all my interviews). Then go to bed after the last blog post published at 12.30am…

7.30am..eyes open, reach for iphone…Holy Crap! Fracture’s resigned!…I have to rewrite my script again! before the show..bribe my hubby into driving my son to school, so I can read all the tweets, read the blogs the comments, and do what I need to do in situations like this..

We get to the studio to find out that some Avatars appear to have camped out there all night! reminds me of  waiting in line for U2 tickets…(not that I ever did that) The audience is talking on voice as I arrive and I hear Prokofy holding court, everyone has an opinion and lots of them!

On stage behind our large Lagg screen…I go to sit in my usual chair…even with the Lag screen up…I don’t tip right side up for quite a while..hmmm lagg is bad, and we only have 45 on the sim! We capped it at 73, odd number I know, but that’s what it was capped at, some time back, and we never changed it. Guests all arrived all suffering various stages of Lag..can’t log in…voice not working…and Emerald Team memeber Jessica Lyon notes the Sim is at 1fps….she is wondering how its managing to stay up! She also notes that there are several famed greifer types in the audience and one-day-old Avatars, some of who seem to be running attached mulitple replicating scripts…(excuse me here as I have no idea how that is done..or what its officially called) Our security guy SuperDave crashed as one by one all of us did, then couldn’t get back in…We had to restart the sim, and wanted to disable all the scripts on the sim including our group ones to see if we could stop the greifing. If that was not going to work, then we would close the sim blocking it off to all but a list of people who we recognised in the audience. People we didn’t know would be shut out..simple! We started compiling a list, of audience members…the problem is none of us could get to Estate Tools they were not loading or greyed out..

We started the sim, again…it crashed, probably as people tried to get in, and none of us with Estate powers got in…again the sim crashed…same story. Which is when we decided to flee…go to a secret location to film the show without an audience only the Emerald Team the other guests and our crew allowed in. Delinda Dyrssen tells me she and some others were being begged to allow some others to come, journalists and freinds…

During the taping, we had one of our team members relaying the chat from the Tonight Live studio where some 50 people were watching the live stream on our screen..and from the chat window on the live feed on treet.tv (that had over 300 chatters!) to me, so I could see questions coming through, joining the group chat was a nightmare for me in S.L the entire chat was blocking my screen with all sort of stuff… I beleive the atmosphere at the Tonight Live Studio was murderous, people wanting blood from our Emerald Guests….

The nice thing really, about going to the secret location, (despite the “Made For Television” drama) was the ability to relax to do all three interviews, without any fear of greif or disarray, we needed to do that.

Yes we broke all records for live viewership for any recorded show in Second Life, Wiz tells me we beat the last Phillip Linden Q&A broadcast last month, sorry Pip…I love you but…I will get the stats tomorrow some time, there were over 300 people in chat, and many thousands on the live stream.

The Emerald Team got to answer some questions from an “ordinary” user… Me…I had input from some of my team before the show, and Hamlet Au gave me the question about using a Real Life name for accountablity. The other  guests Rose and Keiko got to benifit from the massive audience, and although there were lots of people watching who just wanted to get to the Emerald Interview, I know lots of people took in their stories too, and will continue to, over the next week as they view the show on the website. (There are some great visuals during both other interviews you must see!)

Great work Treet.tv! and the PWP Team you all Rock! Treet were working overtime to save chat from crashing and oiling all the wheels..the new servers all up and running beautifully! The PWP team were position all over the grid helping out.

Its 11.00pm here in Sydney Australia, and I’ve just been informed by Communications Manager Arabella Steadham from the Emerald Team who is appearing on Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe tomorrow Sunday 22nd Aug at 6pm… that there is something going down, big time with the Emerald Team. Arabella Steadham has resigned from the Emerald Team. And she and another Emerald Developer have an announcement  to make on the show. I know part of it, but can’t say just yet, the rest I’m speculating on. Sufice it to say, there will be a huge announcement at the Tonight Live show tomorrow about the future of the Emerald Viewer, and what the users can expect.

Every day this week, I, like you, have woken up to some new Emerald drama, and I’ve re-written my script accordingly (you have no idea…). By the time you read this I will be in bed…and I don’t know what you will know…or what will happen next.

All I know is…that we have an interview with two Senior Emerald team members tomorrow/today, and there will be a big announcement.

I also know that Emerald by design is a damn good viewer, and a hell of a lot of people use it, but so many that have NO idea what is going on within the code of the viewer and how they have been and may be used. The history of the main team members is murky and worrying. There are lots of questions about what has happened this week..see below post,  and Emerald Viewer users want re-assurance that the viewer is safe.  But most of all, for many, that the viewer won’t be banned by Linden Lab..why? because the official L.L viewer stinks…sorry Phillip…but I only use it to change clothes…sigh…

For the few of us that watch the blogs, read the drama, we have a choice… delete the viewer…go to Imprudence..use something else…even the rotten Viewer 2.0, but what about those that don’t know, they should know shouldn’t they? Is this a beat up? what else is going on behind the scenes…

Well! what a week its been for the developers of the incredibly popular Second Life Emerald Viewer from Developer Modular Systems. One developer leaves in a flurry of controversy, and a new recruit to Emerald is signed on, the highly regarded and respected Ex Linden Qarl Linden/Qarl Fizz or Karl Stiefvater in RL.

There is little doubt that while the official Viewer 2.0  from Linden Lab has failed spectacularly, the more complex and “old school” style Emerald viewer has been climbing and climbing in popularity and including many features that no other viewer has.

This Sunday at Northpoint, I’m interviewing Emerald’s owner Fractured Crystal and PR Rep for the team, Arabella Steadham on Tonight Live. What motivates them? How and why is Emerald doing so well? What their thoughts are on Linden Lab’s failure to produce a viewer that people actually want to use? I’ll also be asking, should we trust the Emerald team in light of the recent revelations by Ex Emerald Developer LordGreggreg? Are they concerned with the new direction that L.L claim to be taking with their Snowstorm viewer?

I will try to include questions from the audience in this interview, being as Im certainly NOT a developer and have no expertise in viewer developement, but as a fan and user of Emerald (like most of the viewers), Im keen to know what’s going on, am I safe using this viewer now? What is Karl going to be doing? Also… we at T.L have been told there may be an announcement or two on this Sundays show from the team, so make sure you tune in.

We also talk to the face of Second Life Keiko Takamura..The picture above should explain why I call Keiko that… Keiko has been on Tonight Live and Live n Kickin previously, she is without doubt the highest profile Second Life Musician in real life, appearing on several MTV shows, and being featured as the face of Second Life on these ads that have appeared on You Tube, Avatars United, XStreet and many other places. Keiko has gone from being one of the shyest performers in SL and in R.L to forming her own band working real life gigs, and now just releasing her new album with her Band the Shebangs! How did Second Life help her to acheive such success?

Can high quality Art really get seen and appreciated in Second Life if it can never be shown to a large scale public who are restricted to PG or G rated work?

You might remember this exhibit by Rose Borchovski (above) if you visited the Second Life 7th Birthday celebration in Second Life early enough. This work titled “The Kiss” was banned by Linden Lab because it did not fit into the category set by them for the birthday celebration. No explanation was ever given to Rose Borchovski by Linden Lab for the banning, even though she pursued it several times with them directly. I’d like Rose’s thoughts on Linden Lab’s decision to ban this work, and on her thoughts on what she perceives as the problem with restricting large scale Second Life exhibits to G rated content.

M Linden had his detractors but he was a champion for Art in Second Life and now with him gone, and the focus on *F.E.F what is the future of serious Art like Rose’s Exhibit in Second Life?

Rose has an extraordinary Sim in SL that tells the story of Susa Bubble a character she has created an entire story and artwork around. In real life Rose Borchovski is a multi media Artist and Director and has quite an extraordinary exhibit coming up in real life she will talk to us about.

Our very Own Bliss Windlow Wins a “Fabbie.”

Earlier this week , Bliss Windlow was awarded a “Fabbie” by It’s Only Fashion’s Gidge Uriza and/or Cajsa Lilliehook.

This award recognizes excellence in blogging where ever it is seen. Gidge state Bliss was awarded the “Fabbie,” …..”because she made me cry with laughter on the post Why Amateurs Should Never Explain the Gorean Way – Especially to a Feminist. “

She also states, “Oh BLISS you have slain me on a day when I had to get out of bed and face the dragon. I am absolutely in tears considering exactly how this conversation went. “

Bliss Windlow writes a number of blogs ranging from humour, social commentary, inspirtational and fashion. We just know her as “Blissy” .. the hired help and yes, she keeps us crying too (and I mean that in a good way).
